LEWIS FAMILY OF WEST AMBOY
AND
OLD MAP OF AMBOY,
OSWEGO CNTY, N.Y.

The attached map shows farms of my GGgfather, George Washington Lewis, and his brother, Thomas Jefferson Lewis, who were born in Hopkinton, Washington Co., RI.

They were sons of Nathaniel5  Lewis (Israel4, Nathaniel3, Israel2, John1 of Westerly, RI) and Mary E. "Polly" (Thompson) Lewis, who migrated in 1819 by oxcart with their nine children from Hopkinton to Butternuts (later Morris) in Otsego Co., NY.

George W. was the oldest of the children (b. 11/29/1800) and, before 1827, married Sarah M. "Sally" Bassett. They moved to West Amboy, where George died sometime after 1870. His wife, Sarah, was the daughter of Joseph Bassett and Elizabeth (Soule) Bassett, who were neighbors of Nathaniel and Polly Lewis in Butternuts. Sarah (Elizabeth6, Jonathan5, Jonathan4, Sylvanus3, Nathaniel2, George1) was a direct descendant of George Soule, one of the passengers on the Mayflower in 1620.
