PREFACE.

1615.
Sieur de Samuel Champlain first visited the Great Lake of the Entonhonorous (Ontario) and wondered at the discharge of the mighty Chouaguen (Oswego).

1727.
Gov. William Burnett for King George III. builded a "Stone House of Strength" at a place called Oswego, at the mouth of the Onnondages River, sometimes called the Chouguen.  Such work was protested by His Lordship the Marquis of Beauharnais on the part of His Majesty the King of France.

1755-56.
The Stone House on the right of the River's Mouth, known as Fort Ontario, was now supplemented by another work on the left, called Fort Chouaguen or Fort Pepperill.  In August, 1756, three thousand French and Indians under the Marquis de Montcalm stormed and captured both Forts with seventeen hundred men, Colonel Mercer the English Commandant being killed.

1758.
The French cede Oswego to the English.

1795.
The English evacuate Fort Ontario and the flag of the Union is raised above it.

1814.
Oswego bombarded and captured by the English, during what was known as the War of 1812.

1815.
Oswego again evacuated by the English.

1848.
Oswego incorporated as a City.

1889.
The Fortnightly Club founded by B. W. Bacon, D. D., LL. D.

1892.
Fortnightly Club purchases a home and increases its membership to 100.

1902.
Fortnightly Club prospereth with a full membership limited at 125.
