Miss Philinda Clock’s Quilt, Parish
NY
**********
A signature quilt and what a
mystery it is. This handmade heirloom was made in 1854, before Philinda
married Mr. John Henry Miller in 1855, my gggrandfather. They
had three children, Herbert, Ida and Frank.
Philinda was born in German
Flats, Herkimer County, NY. She was the daughter of Daniel Clock
(Klock) and Efau Rema (Rima). They had 10 children and
eight of them lived to adulthood. Daniel and Efan’s first three children
were born in German Flats, before they moved to Parish sometime between
1834 and 1836.
The quilt is eight by seven
blocks. The near center block is inscribed “Miss Philinda Clock’s
Quilt? Parish? Oswego ? County ? NY ? 1854 “ with a unique stitching,
as is the rest of the other 48 names.

A few of these names were easy
to guess at, but there are many that I don’t connect. Are they school
friends, neighbors or are they related in some other way? If you
have ideas, please contact me.
The quilt has always remained
in the family and is still in very good condition. Philinda gave
the quilt to her eldest son, Herbert L Miller (1856-1911).
He passed it down to his nephew, Lynn H Miller, (son of Frank
E and Blanche Treadway Miller). Lynn’s wife, Lucille Courbat
Miller Holmes still treasures it to this day and is on put on view
in a guest bedroom.
